Samba, Soccer, The Amazon and beautiful Beaches….that’s what you must be thinking when I say Brazil, don’t you? …
Brazil is a destination for fun, adventure and excitement. And recently it was the host for the 2014 FIFA world cup, the biggest sports event in the world.
Brazil didn’t win the tournament; in fact, they even had one of the team’s highest losing scores ever. 7-0 against Germany, yes!! You heard that right…
Disqualified from the semifinals even before the end of the game, unsatisfied with the performance of their team, many supporters wanted to save the pain and avoid watching the rest of it, they just cleared the stadium as they cleared one of their islands before and avoided visiting it to save their own lives.
That island is Queimada Grande, located 145 km across from Sao Paolo shores and considered one of the most dangerous islands in the world…
Why? The answer is quite simple since Queimada Grande is gorged with the most venomous snakes’ species in the world including the golden lancehead viper. Scientists presume that the island is home for more than 4000 snakes living on its surface of 430,000 square metres (110 acres).
If you have never heard of the golden lancehead viper before then you should know that it is one of most dangerous venomous snakes in the world. The chance of survival from its bite doesn’t exceed 7%....and even when treated its venom can cause swelling, local pain, nausea and vomiting, blood blisters, bruising, blood in the vomit and urine, intestinal bleeding, kidney failure, hemorrhage in the brain and severe necrosis of muscular tissue..
Local stories on the island say that one day a fisherman decided to go fishing in the island and got bitten by snake, he somehow managed to get to his boat but eventually gave in to the powerful venom from the bite, he was found days later on his boat swimming in his own blood. Another story says that the local Lighthouse keeper also died from a snake bite too.
After hearing all these stories you must be convinced about the danger crawling on that island, but fortunately Brazil also has other beautiful, attractive and amazing destinations you can enjoy visiting. It is one of the best tourists’ destinations in the world.
